Team Requirements

ELIGIBILITY OVERVIEW

Participation in NJISRA is strictly team-based.  Individual racers may not compete independently. All student-athletes must be members of an officially recognized New Jersey high school ski team.

All participating high schools must confirm that their ski team is administered as an interscholastic winter sport of their school, and not as a club activity of their school, with the same approval, oversight, and requirements as other varsity sports.

Schools may field a boys team, a girls team, or both. Schools are not required to field teams for both genders.

Co-operative teams are NOT permitted.

The requirements below apply separately to each gender in which a school fields a team. For complete membership requirements, please refer to NJISRA BYLAWS ARTICLE IV - MEMBERSHIP 

Team Size & Scoring

  • A team must have at least 3 racers start for each gender in which it fields a team.
  • A racer counts toward the minimum only if they actually start the race by tripping the start wand. Being registered, listed on the start sheet, or present at the race does not count.
  • A team must compete in at least 50% of its scheduled conference races to be eligible for team scoring and league standings.
  • A conference race counts toward the 50% requirement only when at least 3 racers for that gender actually start the race.
  • Individual points are awarded only to Varsity racers.

One-Season Team Participation Exemption

  • A member high school may request a one-season team participation exemption for a varsity boys or girls team that does not meet the minimum participation requirements. The exemption is intended to provide a team with one season to establish or rebuild its roster and may be used by an existing team as circumstances require. The exemption applies separately to the boys and girls teams.
  • If a team fails to meet the team requirements during a season, that same season will count as the team's one-season exemption for that gender.
  • During the exemption season, Varsity racers remain eligible for individual points even if the team does not meet the 3-racer or 50% participation requirements.
  • Beginning with the season immediately following the use of the exemption, the team must meet the minimum participation requirement of three racers of the applicable gender in order for its individual racers to earn NJISRA individual points. No additional exemption will be granted.
  • The one-season exemption may not be used by the same gender team in consecutive seasons.

Subsequent Failure

  • If, in the season following an exemption, a team fails to meet the team requirements or becomes mathematically unable to meet the 50% participation requirement, the school may continue to race for the remainder of that season but will be ineligible for team scoring, league standings, and Varsity individual points for that gender.
  • The school will be required to reapply for membership for that gender for the following season.
  • Reinstatement requires Executive Committee review and reapplication, subject to appeal.

🆕 NEW TEAM MEMBERSHIP

We welcome and encourage new high school ski teams to apply and join the league. New teams must meet the following requirements to be eligible for participation:

    • The NJISRA Executive Committee reviews all applications and will render a decision by October 1.
    • If approved by the Executive Committee, the new team must receive majority approval at the annual Fall Meeting to become an NJISRA member.
    • No in-person presentation is required.

    Existing teams must complete the annual renewal process by October 15.

    • Pay all required NJISRA fees.

    Late submissions or unpaid fees may result in ineligibility for the season.

    TEAM REQUIREMENTS TO COMPETE

    Before competing in NJISRA races, teams must complete:

    • A minimum of 6 dry-land practices with their Coach
    • A minimum of 3 on-snow practices with their high school Coach/Team
    • At least one discipline-specific training day for the type of race, slalom or giant slalom, in which the team will compete.

    COACHING REQUIREMENT

    • Each school must register one Head Coach.
    • The Head Coach is responsible for training, administration, and NJISRA compliance.
    • A coach may serve as Head Coach for only one NJISRA high school.  

    MAINTAINING GOOD STANDING

    Teams must remain in good standing by complying with:

    • NJISRA rules and race procedures
    • Registration and renewal deadlines
    • Fee payment requirements
    • NJISRA team race bib requirements
    • Athlete eligibility documentation
    • Certificate of Liability Insurance requirements
    • NJISRA Code of Conduct and other league policies
