NJISRA Eligibility Overview - Team-Based Competition

Participation in NJISRA is strictly team-based.  Individual racers may not compete independently. All student-athletes must be members of an officially recognized New Jersey high school ski team.

All participating high schools must confirm that their ski team is administered as an interscholastic winter sport of their school, and not as a club activity of their school, with the same approval, oversight, and requirements as other varsity sports.

We welcome and encourage new high school ski teams to apply and join the league.
NOTE: Co-ops are NOT permitted.

Below is a summary of the eligibility requirements for new and existing ski teams. Please refer to the NJISRA BYLAWS ARTICLE IV - MEMBERSHIP for complete details.


🆕 NEW TEAM REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for participation, new teams must meet the following criteria:

Team Membership Request

  • Submit a New Ski Team Membership Application Form, signed by the Superintendent or Principal, the Athletic Director, and the Ski Team Head Coach.
    Note: Typed names are not valid signatures. Electronic signatures are not accepted.
  • Email the form from the official school email address by September 15.

Team Composition

  • Schools may form boys’, girls’, or both teams. Schools are not required to field teams for both genders.
  • Each gender team must have at least three (3) student-athletes.

Roster & Fees

  • Submit a team roster by December 1.
  • Pay all fees by January 1.

Participation Requirement

  • New teams must compete in at least 50% of league races during their first season, with at least 3 racers for any gender in which they field a team.

Scoring Requirement

  • Teams must qualify as a scoring team (per NJISRA Bylaws Article VIII, Item #9).

⚠️ Membership Status

  • Teams that do not meet these requirements will lose membership status for the following season (subject to appeal).

📥 How to Apply

  1. Submit a New Ski Team Membership Application Form signed by the Superintendent or Principal, the Athletic Director, and the Ski Team Head Coach.
  2. Email it from the school official’s email address.
  3. Designate a Head Coach as the main team contact.
  4. Deadline: September 15
  5. No in-person presentation is required.

✅ Approval Process

  • The NJISRA Executive Committee reviews all applications.
  • Membership is approved by majority vote.
  • Decisions are issued by October 1.

🏫 EXISTING TEAM REQUIREMENTS

To maintain active membership, existing teams must meet the following ongoing requirements:

✅ Annual Renewal 

  • Submit a Membership Renewal Form with a Certificate of Liability Insurance naming NJISRA as additional insured and an initial team roster by December 1.
  • Form must be signed by both the Superintendent, Principal, or Athletic Director, and the Ski Team Head Coach.

  • Late submissions may result in ineligibility for the season.

Membership Renewal Form

✅ Minimum Racers

  • Maintain at least 3 registered racers for any gender in which they field a team.

⚠️ One-Time Exemption

  • Teams may apply for a one-time, one-season exemption to race with only 1-2 racers for that gender.

🚫 No Consecutive Exemptions

  • Exemptions may not be used in consecutive seasons.
  • Teams using exemptions two seasons in a row will be ineligible for individual points.

Membership Loss

  • Failure to meet team size requirements for more than one season or in back-to-back seasons will result in automatic suspension of team membership for that gender.
  • Reinstatement requires Executive Committee review and reapplication (subject to appeal).

TEAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SCHOOLS

Team Requirements To Compete

  • Minimum of six (6) dry-land practices with their Coach
  • Minimum of three (3) practices on snow with their high school Coach/Team
  • At least one (1) day of training specific to the type of race, slalom or giant slalom, to race in that discipline.  

Coaching Requirement

  • Each school must register one Head Coach.
  • The Head Coach is responsible for training, administration, and NJISRA compliance.
  • A coach may only serve as Head Coach for one (1) NJISRA high school.  

Staying in Good Standing

Teams must adhere to:

  • NJISRA rules and race procedures
  • Registration deadlines
  • Fee payments
  • Purchasing NJISRA team race bibs
  • Eligibility documentation
  • Provide a Certificate of Laibility Insurance naming NJISRA as additional insured
  • Code of conduct policies
